Sunderland 0-0 Leeds: Regis Le Bris' side remain bottom of Premier League as goalless draw extends winless run

Sunderland remain bottom of the Premier League table after a 0-0 draw against Leeds at home extended their winless run in the top-flight to six games.

Brian Brobbey, featuring for the first time since September 20, came closest to breaking the deadlock but had his effort quickly smothered by James Trafford after racing through on goal in the first half.

Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin was a doubt heading into the fixture but started the game. A risk, by Daniel Farke's own admission, which almost paid off when he went down in the area but claims for a penalty were quickly waved away.

VAR checked and cleared the incident and decided Robin Roefs got a hand to the ball, despite the Leeds forward getting to the ball first.

Former Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff, who was greeted by boos at the Stadium of Light, was twice denied in the latter stages after Roefs tipped one shot wide and the other was blocked on the line.

The draw means Regis Le Bris' side remain bottom of the table, while a point takes Leeds up into seventh.

Weather warnings were in place across northern parts of England and Scotland over the weekend for Storm Boelo, including Sunderland which had an amber warning for wind until 9pm on Sunday night.

Given the poor weather conditions, Sunderland posted a statement on social media just over four hours before kick-off confirming the game would be going ahead, with the club advising supporters to "take extra care" on their way to the ground.

A windswept Daniel Farke was pictured among the arrivals at the ground as powerful gusts swirled around Wearside and on the pitch during the match.

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris speaking to Your Site:

"It's a positive [point], the more positive [thing] is the way we played with intensity, togetherness - we were Sunderland today.

"It's still a long journey, we know with this busy schedule playing in Europe, playing in the Carabao Cup, it's a new challenge for us and we need to embrace it.

"I think we showed this afternoon that we are in this challenge, we want to embrace it and be ourselves and we probably deserved a bit more today."

Leeds boss Daniel Farke speaking at his post-match press conference:

"First of all, I think it's fair to say it was not the nicest piece of football.

"On a day like this you can accept this, of course, on a warm, sunny Saturday or Sunday afternoon after a good training week anyone can play proper football, but these games also belong to the Premier League.

"We had a difficult training week with many key players not available during the week. Came here to a difficult ground; not many teams have won here last season; they've qualified for Europe.

"It was one of these days where you have to accept that you can't shine that much football-wise; it's more or less to dig in and grind out a result, fight for second balls and show steel. This is what we did today.

"You travel back home from an away ground in the Premier League with a point and a clean sheet; that's always a good result.

"We had perhaps at the end of the game two good chances for Sean Longstaff, also an opportunity to score, a penalty shout, I'm not sure how close that was.

"Overall, I think the draw is also a fair outcome of this game and for us, definitely a good point. In these conditions also a good outcome."

Sunderland defender Luke O'Nien speaking to Your Site:

"I think the wind played a big part and credit to both defences and the attacks as well to be able to keep it to no goals in that swirling wind.

"I think it was a good effort from everybody so obviously we want three points from where we are in the table but keep putting up the performances like that and we'll get some.

"I think the table always reflects fairly where teams deserve to be, and I think over the course of the season, if we keep putting in performances like that, it will represent where we should be.

"But the table always reflects where people should be but we need to keep looking at ourselves, don't look at other anyone else, it's no one else's fault but us and we know that."
